It would seem American excess is in full display during the changing of the years. Is there any annual event that is not used as an excuse for drunken carousing in this country?

It is disconcerting to know that I remain the same age, even though we have passed into a new year. In my culture, everyone ages on this day. Clean, precise, orderly. I am disquieted by the necessity to consider myself a different age in different countries.

Perhaps I will indulge in one trite American custom: my resolution for this year is to stop suffering fools so lightly. And to reclaim my slippers and cap that which has been taken from me.
